Swedish Rug, Scandinavia, Early 20th Century – This spectacular rug woven by Barbro Nilsson at the workshops of Marta Maas Fjetterstrom features Rectilinear ribbons and vertical bands decorated with striped segments.  Coffered squares create a sophisticated allover pattern that is set over a beautifully oxidized mahogany red field embellished with abrashed details and variegated stripes that incorporate complementary hues of rusty brown and burnt orange. Stippled bands form horizontal stripes that are an integral part of the compartmental allover pattern. The formal vertical stripes are decorated with undulating lines and coffered squares rendered in alternating shades of umber, celadon and ivory. Created circa 1920, this exceptional vintage Swedish rug embodies the formal geometry, handsome colors and textural variegation that are renowned among regional rugs.
