Anthropologie Rugs Tylie Malibu Kilim Bags by Nazmiyal Antique Rugs

Anthropologie Rugs Tylie Malibu Kilim Bags

I have spent many an hour scouring this planet for shoes inspired by carpets. I have personally owned and loved more than a few Kilim shoes and flats. Much to my delight, designers often integrate carpet motifs or actual fragments and pieces of rugs into housewares and sometimes even shoes.

Heike Weber Pasta Carpets by Nazmiyal Antique Rugs

Heike Weber Pasta Carpets

We posted a while ago about the Pazyryk Carpet, better known as the oldest “living” carpet in the world. It is humbling to contemplate this still colorful artifact, especially as this week has brought more than a few stories of hacking. One technology journalist’s electronic devices – an I-phone, I-pad and MacBook- were remotely accessed and wiped clean, along with his cloud-stored data. The Australian government’s web presence was briefly crippled by the hacking group Anonymous. And on a personal note, I dropped my phone, and with it photos from Spain, weddings, and family off of a balcony. All of this is to say, in the digital age, there is a certain inherent ephemerality that is in stark contrast to the timeless antique woven works that we display, buy and sell here at Nazmiyal.

Most Expensive Antique Native American Navajo Blanket by Nazmiyal Antique Rugs

Most Expensive Antique Native American Navajo Blanket

When I saw that a 19th century antique Navajo blanket was sold in an auction for – $1,800,000 – my eyebrow immediately shot upwards to my hairline. “What?!” I thought to myself – or perhaps I even spoke it aloud. “How could that sell for so much money?! ” It was an ordinary blanket, hardly more elegant or interesting than the most mundane Moroccan here in our gallery.

Most Expensive Painting vs. Rug Ever Sold

For twelve agonizing minutes the audience watched and even cheered as they watched five bidders compete for the pleasure of owning The Scream by Edvard Munch. The buzz could be felt as the bids kept inching their way higher and high, till the bidding paused for a bit at $99 million dollars which prompted Tobias Meyer, the auctioneer, to say, “I have all the time in the world.”

Antique Carpet DNA by Wilbur Pierce by Nazmiyal Antique Rugs

Antique Carpet DNA by Wilbur Pierce

The unshaven man stood on a boulder looking up at the cave ceiling. The women’s name was Gryt and his name Grunt. He listened to her instructions, for they were husband and wife. As he was married, he did nothing right. He kept dropping his bearskin loincloth to his knees as he lifted his arms to draw and pulling them up; she scolded him for not wearing his belt. She saw the full moon. In the distance, wolves wailed and she laughed. He kept reaching toward the top the cave and making pictures. Together, they decorated the vault and marked the rock face with charcoal that she had just pulled out of the fire. Adding some color from a red rock that man later learned was iron, he scraped a blue rock that had copper in it and made a third color. He stepped back pleased as deer appeared on the walls of his home. Gryt smiled and Grunt went to bed.

Antique Rug Gallery Intern Afterthoughts by Nazmiyal Antique Rugs

Antique Rug Gallery Intern Afterthoughts

What are you doing this summer? Generally, that is one of the first questions asked to a college student. Response: “I am an intern at an antique rug gallery.” Usually people have a double take when they hear this. Antique rugs are associated with a specific crowd, not a liberal arts student. But, as I explain to them, it all comes together. The term antique rugs is marred by misconceptions. It strays from the general art gallery mentality and instead focuses on a consumer oriented market, not the contemporary art scene.
