If the Met’s blurb about this exhibition calls Caro, “…the most influential and prolific British sculptor of his generation and a key figure in the development of modernist sculpture of the last sixty years…” he has to be a big deal, right? Well, the good news is Caro’s work brings modern sculptural genius straight to Manhattan sitting perfectly atop NYC’s iconic museum.
The dog day’s of summer are finally lurking around every corner where one can’t walk down the street without seeing a Mister Softee truck peddling the summer staples of dipped cones, popsicles, and your favorite cartoon character in its purest creamy frozen form. We, New York’ers, braved the cold months of snow-pocalyps’es, layers of thermal “heat tech” undergarments, and bulky parkas galore which can now be vacuum-sealed and stored under our beds.
What are you doing this summer? Generally, that is one of the first questions asked to a college student. Response: “I am an intern at an antique rug gallery.” Usually people have a double take when they hear this. Antique rugs are associated with a specific crowd, not a liberal arts student. But, as I explain to them, it all comes together. The term antique rugs is marred by misconceptions. It strays from the general art gallery mentality and instead focuses on a consumer oriented market, not the contemporary art scene.
With a global economy in turmoil, conflicts raging in the Middle East and Africa, poverty and global warming, we, as a people, are facing serious challenges. During the recent US elections, America has demonstrated its belief in the “audacity of hope”. We have made a historic decision to leave behind the divisive identities that have so far kept us from working together for a common purpose. We have affirmed that the things that unite us are far more important than the issues that separate us from one another, and that to meet the challenges ahead, America must look to the future rather than the past.
This past Thursday the Nazmiyal Collection hosted an opening celebration at its Manhattan NYC rug gallery for a new line of contemporary Tibetan rugs, produced by the renowned carpet firm, New Moon rugs. Made in Nepal and designed by John Kurtz, New Moon rugs has in recent years established a new standard of quality in the production of Oriental rugs and more modern contemporary carpets.
On June 4, The New York Nazmiyal gallery welcomed AIG Private Client Group’s Risk Management Specialists for an educational lecture on new and antique carpets from around the world. Betsy Murphy, our antique carpet specialist, provided insight on carpet classifications and identifiers to help distinguish between fine quality antique carpets and new production carpets.
