Antique Kashan, Persia, late nineteenth century – This exquisitely elegant antique Kashan has a classical Persian medallion design that is almost jewel-like in its coloration and drawing. A golden medallion outlined in ruby-red occupies the center, surrounded my a mesh of fine tendrils, with grand finials and cornerpieces in red just beyond. The lovely variegated blue green ground of the field provides the perfect foil for the red and gold. The main border echoes the forms, colors, and texture of the medallion, completing the composition with a masterful touch.
