Hooked Rug, America, Late 19th Century – A varied array of scenes unfolds across the mauve and tan checkered field of this exquisitely charming antique American hooked rug. Some squares contain ornamental scroll patterns; others, stylized plant designs. But most contain the charming folk-style images of men and women in eighteenth-century dress surrounded by wreaths, either singly or as couples. An especially novel feature is the orientation of the figures, which is frequently inverted, undoubtedly to make the pattern pleasing from which ever end one views it.
