Khotan Rug, East Turkestan, Late 19th Century – In the traditional Khotan style, this antique carpet is framed by multiple sets of borders each featuring a distinct design, including detailed rosettes, a pinyin wan fretwork pattern and symbolic scrolling borders enhanced by detailed amulets. Polychrome borders complement the oxidized blue-green field, which features an archetypal pomegranate pattern with angular branches and harmonious parallel symmetry. Detailed pomegranate fruits decorated with individual seeds woven in a combination of red and oxidized orange represent one of Khotan’s most iconic designs and prosperity symbols.
